August 15, 1947, marked the birth of the world’s largest democracy. Every year, Indians living in their homeland or abroad celebrate this day with much fervour.

Incidentally, we are not the only country which gained independence on this date. 

Here are the five countries, apart from India, that celebrate their Independence Day on August 15: 

Republic of Congo: The Central African country gained independence from French colonial rulers on August 15, 1960. The region came under French rule in 1880 and became known first as French Congo, then as Middle Congo in 1903.

Noodles: Noodles, such as Pad Thai, are a staple in Thai cuisine. Very flavorful, these might be made from chicken, tofu, or prawns.

Thai food has a lot of curry in it, you might even have more than one dishes with curry in a meal. Curry can be red, yellow-colored, and also green and may be used together or separate. Curry can be used on most anything: poultry, sea food. It is also used with tofu and vegetables. This may vary with the area and the type of protein sources they have.

Vegetables abound in Thai cooking, and you’ll enjoy a stir-fry made with a variety of vegetables and sauces. This is served with jasmine rice on the side, which is deliciously fragrant itself.

  • Rice is the staple food at every meal for most people. All food is brought to the table at once rather than being served in courses. A meal will include rice, dishes with gravy, side dishes, soup, and a salad. Whereas in central and southern Thailand polished white rice is eaten, in the north and northeast people eat glutinous or sticky rice. Fish and shellfish are popular.
